The Essence of the Liberation Nexus Lab

Vision

We envision a kind and liberated society.

When we stripped away all of the pretenses and fluff, we realized that the ultimate aspiration of our work is to create a kind and liberated society—one in which everyone can live freely without oppression and care for and support one another. This is simultaneously simple and incredibly complex. There is so much in the way of achieving our vision, but our focus is steady.

We quietly create connection where there is none. We model kindness and liberation. We intentionally build this foundation and chip away at the barriers. It is our life’s work.

Mission

Our mission is to shift hearts and minds by cultivating community and deep connections through our consulting services, cohort programs, and online community.

Our mission operationalizes our vision—it clearly states what we do and how we do our work in a short, sweet, and easy-to-understand statement.

Our vision is forward-looking, but our mission is rooted in the here and now. This is what we wake up and do every single day. If we ever get distracted or want to chase shiny objects, we return to this statement and remind ourselves that this is where our time, energy, and labor is concentrated.

Core Values

When we got to it, we settled on three core values to guide our work. These values are integral to how our work is carried out and establish boundaries on which we are not willing to compromise.

Radical Imagination: Radical imagination allows us to be steadfast in our belief that a better world is achievable and worth fighting for. It is also a catalyst, allowing new and previously unforeseen possibilities to come into focus.

Radical imagination is not for the faint of heart—it requires the continuous cultivation of hope in the face of darkness. When we start to despair and question, we turn to radical imagination as a reminder of what is essential and use it to chart a path forward.

Realness: Realness removes the rose-colored glasses and allows us to let go of the perfunctory and performance in favor of a clear look at reality. We visibilize systems and structures that contribute to inequality and oppression. We don’t shy away from the hard stuff.

Realness allows for an honest accounting of the current state and a grounded assessment of what is possible. Trust is built on a foundation of authenticity. Clear is kind.

Relationships: We go beyond the transactional to recognize the power of relationships and community in creating transformational change. Anti-racist, justice, and liberation work cannot be done in a vacuum; we invest in creating spaces for people of all backgrounds and walks of life to engage with one another.

Our Strategies

If we allow leaders to learn, be in community with one another, and apply their knowledge, we can create a kinder and liberated society. Our trainings, consulting services, programs, and writing are intended to provide education, leadership development, and community building.

Education: We educate leaders on how systems of oppression manifest in organizations, communities, and our everyday lives. We offer trainings and workshops on various topics, cohort programs (like our Community of Practice and Disruptive Leadership programs), and our free weekly Resistance Regroup series.

Leadership Development: We help leaders understand how to intervene in systems of oppression, tap into their sphere of influence, and integrate practices into their daily lives. We offer two programs, our Community of Practice and Disruptive Leadership programs, to shift hearts and mindsets and establish a basis for short- and long-term transformational change.

Community-Building: Everything worth doing is done in a community. We believe in the power of community to create lasting change and deeply understand the need for interpersonal support when taking initial steps. We offer an online community and our cohort programs to provide learning, support, and a catalyst for action.

Much of my professional work over the last decade has involved helping organizations develop their vision, mission, and values statements. I deeply understand the weighty responsibility of capturing and communicating an organization's core essence clearly and succinctly. That responsibility is amplified, though, when the task is to write our own mission, vision, and values statements. It took Emerald and me several times before we got it right and could feel confident stepping into our business’s identity.
